The Young Philadelphians pays tribute to twin legacies: The mind-blowing harmolodic punk-funk of Ornette Coleman's first Prime Time band and the sweet, optimistic pulse of 1970s Philly Soul. Ribot enlists bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma and drummer G. Calvin Weston, both Prime Time alumni and Philadelphia natives, along with guitarist Mary Halvorson plus a newly added 3-piece string section to do the job.

On one side of the avenue, the Chelsea-Elliot Houses have provided low-income public housing to residents for decades. On May 13, Marc along with his trio featuring bassist Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor, will release a live recording on Pi Recordings from their 2012 residency at the venerable Village Vanguard. Not only was it Ribot’s debut as a leader at the iconic venue, the occasion also marked the first appearance by Grimes at the Vanguard since 1966. In a wide-ranging set, the trio plays the music of Ayler, covers tracks from the John Coltrane's album “Sun Ship,” and a standard or two.
Album will be also be available on limited edition 180gram vinyl!
Record Release Show: May 12th at Le Poisson Rouge (NYC)
On June 16th at Issue Project Room (Brooklyn, NY) this benefit concert for the guitar program set up in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for low income youth and honoring Marc's late mentor, guitar teacher and the the Father of Haitian classical guitar, Frantz Casseus, will feature Marc Ribot, Alberto Mesirca, Marc Mathelier, Melanie Charles, Barbara Simon, Trio Blastphemy (Curtis Hasselbring, Ben Holmes, Marcus Rojas) and DJ Greg Caz.
After Haiti was devastated by earthquake in 2010, Ribot founded the Frantz Casséus Young Guitarists Program in Port-Au-Prince. The program, run jointly by the Haitiana Music Company, Caracol and the Holy Trinity Music School, offers a haven for creativity and stability to low-income students.

A number of people have asked us what's up with Masters of the Internet. Do we hate our fans? Are we Luddites? Well, no and no. Here's what we think:
We don't really expect much from asking people who are downloading stuff for free to voluntaristically pay up- although, yeah, we could use that dollar right about now, and we support Trichordist's Principles for an Ethical and Sustainable Internet . We don't know what the ultimate solution is- but we know it isn't the impoverishment of musicians and defunding music. And we know it isn't pretending that no-one is being hurt. Corporations are making huge profits from the ads on 'free' sites, from selling the hard and software that make illegal downloading possible. They need to give back a portion of their billions to the people who do the work: hey, we love our tech toys too, but an empty i-Pod is just a crappy paper-weight. Giving us back part of the value we create would make a real FREE culture possible- one where fans get what they need, AND creative community workers get paid. Bread and Roses, baby!
